How to teach a child to ride a balance bike

4 simple steps any parent can use. No expertise needed — just natural, step-by-step guidance.

Step 1. Introduction

Let the child simply sit on the balance bike and walk with their feet forward, backward, and sideways. No riding yet — just getting used to how the bike feels.

Step 2. Pushing off

Once the child feels confident, show them how to push off with both feet at the same time. At first these are small hops, but they quickly become longer glides.

Step 3. Gliding

Next come longer glides with feet off the ground. This is where the child develops the real sense of balance. Don't rush — some children reach this step in days, others in weeks. Both are perfectly normal.

Step 4. Steering

Once gliding is mastered, the child starts steering around obstacles and choosing their path. The balance bike becomes a real vehicle and the child takes over.

Tips for parents

  • Don't force it. If the child isn't ready, pause for a few weeks.
  • Start on a flat surface, not a slope.
  • Celebrate every small win.
  • A helmet is mandatory from day one.
  • Don't compare to other children. Each learns at their own pace.
